For your marketing to be effective, you need to have a good understanding of your customer, a strategy to follow and then the tactics to deliver that strategy.
It’s not about you!
No matter what marketing you deliver, fundamentally it is imperative that you understand your target customer:
- What are their personas?
- What do they care about?
- What makes them tick?
- Fundamentally how can you help them solve their problems with your products or services?
- And how can you do it better/cheaper than anyone else?
Once you have answered these key questions that will help you better understand the best way to communicate with them, what channels they prefer, down to what language resonates better with them and also what types of images they prefer.
You need a cunning plan
In simple terms a strategy is a plan or method of winning. This is an area that many forget but which provide you with the overarching objective – to which the tactics deliver against. This is the result of your market assessment, your SWOT analysis your market segmentation, your product mix. Do you target the mass market – or a segment. Is that segment based on geography – or a specialism.
Tactics are the area that most of us spend the majority of our time on, the area that is the fastest moving. Many think marketing is just the way we communicate with customers and get obsessed by the outbound marketing, the content and social media as if it is the only thing that matters. But while this is all part of marketing – it is merely the execution of your customer focus and your resulting strategy.
If you have been considered and undertaken the preparation in the first instance, then the tactic should deliver better results. It’s no big secret – just takes a little more time.
