Google Speed Update Threatens Slow Mobile Sites

Google Shopping free listings are a welcome new benefit to online retailers in a positive move amidst ongoing events in the world.

Google’s announcement comes at an opportune time for eCommerce vendors as online shopping blossoms during the COVID-19 era.

Bill Ready, Google’s President of Commerce, broke the news in an official blog post titled It’s now free to sell on Google.

Acknowledging current happening globally, Ready said:

With physical stores shuttered, digital commerce has become a lifeline for retailers.
And as consumers increasingly shop online, they’re searching not just for essentials but also things like toys, apparel, and home goods.
Shopping habits have changed quite dramatically over the last few weeks, both in the real world and online. Here in Britain, retail stores are closed and many supermarkets are operating reduced hours with social distancing measures in place. That has driven consumers shop online and eCommerce websites to experience a massive uptick in traffic.
Some big online sites have struggled with visitor numbers and others have had to put in place queuing systems like Pets at Home and B&Q’s DIY.com portal.
The supermarkets have seen home deliveries subscriptions boom and delivery times have increased to as much as three weeks even with improved and expanded services.
This all goes to how that online activity is thriving and retailers need to step in to help satisfy consumer demand.
So with Google Shopping saying it’s now free for merchants to sell on Google is hugely welcome news.

Ecommerce Agency Evolution

Smaller businesses now have the opportunity to be seen by a much wider audience than previously available. Retail sites that relied solely on eCommerce SEO services now have the additional bonus of getting free listings to boost their business.
In addition, Google are rolling out more information to help vendors and also announced a new partnership with PayPal…
This will speed up our onboarding process and ensure we’re surfacing the highest quality results for our users.
For website development agencies, especially those providing WordPress websites with the ever popular WooCommerce platform, there’s more good news:
And we’re continuing to work closely with many of our existing partners that help merchants manage their products and inventory, including Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce, to make digital commerce more accessible for businesses of all sizes.
Solutions during this crisis will not be fast or easy, but we hope to provide a measure of relief for businesses and lay the groundwork for a healthier retail ecosystem in the future.

Thank you and happy shopping.

It's a new year and we're seeing the affects of another core update from Google, which completed on the 29th December. With ever changing tools and increasing volumes of content across online spaces, this update will be seen by many as a welcome change, as Google just got a lot better at spotting whether you really know what you're talking about. If you've been coasting on thin content, AI-generated pages, or just rephrasing what everyone else says, you're in trouble. But if you understand what changed, there's a clear path forward.
Right then. Time for some honesty. Digital marketing in 2026 is no longer just complicated. It is overwhelming for most businesses trying to handle everything alone. We see it all the time at Clever Marketing. People give it a go themselves and fair enough. They hire someone who is good with social media which usually means they post occasionally and hope for the best. Or they patch together a few freelancers who never quite speak to each other. Then suddenly they are tired, the results are flat, and they begin to wonder if digital marketing even works. It does work. Beautifully. But the way most businesses approach it simply cannot keep up anymore.
There is a familiar moment inside many businesses. Someone opens Google Ads with good intentions. A couple of keywords added. A few ads written. Budgets set with a hopeful little shrug. On day one everything looks perfectly fine. The numbers even look encouraging for a short while. Then reality arrives. Costs rise. Conversions wobble. Settings start arguing with each other. Reports turn into a maze nobody wants to enter. The whole thing slowly becomes an expensive guessing game.
